Dothan Eagle - Alabama Newspaper Article - 4/3/93 - Doll Performs Through Pain - Wrestler Spotlight

 In 1993, Steve Doll & Rex King changed their ways and their team name to Simply Devine.  They joined USA Wrestling in Dothan, AL, as the top heel team.  The Dothan Eagle did a story about Steve Doll on April 3, 1993.  The promotion would close within a week or two, and Steve and Rex would be back in the USWA shortly after that.  In just a few months, they would enter the WWF as Well Dunn.

On January 27, 1990, The Southern Rockers left the Pacific Northwest for a "World Tour". They actually went to the USWA in Memphis, Tennessee. They returned in March for one night only. Steve & Rex won the tag team titles twice in the USWA. Steve Doll returned without Rex King on June 9, 1990. This video is from their time in Memphis. WWF should have allowed Well Dunn to develop their characters.

January 30th Kicks off Simply Devine Week! Southern Rockers Steve Doll & Rex King Before Well Dunn

Apparently, January 30th is the start of Simply Devine week! Who knew?

Look, I don't make the laws, I just follow them!

This will kick off a week of Simply Devine/Well Dunn.

Today, I posted a video of the complete saga of Simply Devine from USA Wrestling in Alabama in 1993. If you watch it, come back and tell me how many tag titles they've won in different countries! 🤣

Steve Doll & Rex King, formerly known as the Southern
Rockers, join the new Alabama promotion called USA Wrestling.
This is their first appearance as a heel tag team.

There were some really fun
comedic elements to their characters.

This gimmick led directly into their
Well Dunn work in the WWF, 1993-1995. The team makes more sense when they get a chance to develop their characters. WWF never let them do that.

This was a short-lived promotion
that was associated with Austin Idol.
Other wrestlers in the promotion include Steve Armstrong,
Wendell Cooley, Junkyard Dog, The Iron Sheik, and more. They had
some big plans for the promotion.

Included in this video are all of the preserved appearances of
Simply Devine on USA Wrestling. The channel Armstrong Alley has the

The March 20, 1993, episode was the last shown on television, and the
promotion closed. It is unclear if the rescheduled Battle of
Boutwell actually happened, and if it did, was it taped?

Steve & Rex make their first appearance as Simply Devine in
USWA wrestling in April 1993, beating the Moondogs
for the Southern Tag Team Titles. They join the WWF as Well Dunn in July of 1993.

Well-Dunn WWF 1993-1995 Photos

1993-1995 Steve Doll and Rex King changed their team name from the Southern Rockers to Simply Devine and then ultimately Well-Dunn for their run in the WWF. 

Steve's name was changed to Steven Dunn, and Rex's name was changed to Timothy Well.

 I never quite understood the gimmick. Is it supposed to be arrogant Chippendale Dancers? I didn't like the outfits; they never rose above the mid-card level, and their time there was marred by injuries for both. They weren't used correctly, and giving them those outfits doomed them from the start. They did have some really good matches with The Bushwackers, The Smoking Guns, and even the Rock 'n Roll Express. 

The WWF tried to break their contract at one point because they both were out with injuries. They had to get an attorney and were able to get them to honor the remainder of the contract, which wasn't renewed. 

Steve and Rex never wrestled together regularly after this. Although they did come together to team and feud a few times. 

Steve remained Steven Dunn for the rest of his career, with a few exceptions. Rex King, whose real name was Timothy Smith, went back to being called Rex King for the remainder of his career.

 In 1990, when Steve Doll returned to Portland from the USWA, I took these photos to get them signed. I got them from a pen pal of mine who lived in Tennessee. He looked at them closely and said, "JODY!! Did you follow me to Tennessee?? Why didn't you come say hi?". I laughed and told him no, that I got them from a pen pal. He didn't know about the network of wrestling pen pals and thought it was pretty cool. That's Brickhouse Brown in the ring with Rex King.
