Portland Wrestling Complete Show 9/7/1985 You Tube Video + Program

 This is probably the second or third time I'd gotten to go to the Sports Arena. The S&S Express were my favorite team! Steve Simpson was my favorite wrestler. The first night we went to the Sports Arena, we waited in the parking lot after the matches to get autographs. Steve and Ricky Vaughn were riding together, and after we got their autographs, we went running back to my mom's car. I slipped and fell. Steve Simpson jumped out of the car, ran over to check on me, scooped me up (I was 9), and carried me to the car. After that, he was my favorite!

Ricky Vaughn wrestled in Portland for a brief period in 1985.

He later joined World Class Championship Wrestling and became a Von Erich 'cousin". 

Ricky and Steve Simpson were roommates in an apartment right behind

the old Organ Grinder and Bob's Big Boy on 82nd.  We saw them one evening 

while going for some pizza!  

 

Autographs from Portland Wrestling in 1985!

Autograph sessions were a big deal at the Sports Arena.  When they announced them they always seemed to draw a larger crowd, even though there always seemed to be a guy or two out a the table almost every Saturday night. No better way to sell your merch! We started going to the Sports Arena in 1985.  Some of these could have been from my very first event!

1985 Wrestling Buttons ~ Steve Simpson, Ricky Vaughn & The S&S Express

1985 was the first year I ever went to a live wrestling event at the Portland Sports Arena.

Obviously, I had the time of my life and couldn't wait to go back as often as possible!

Throughout 1985 I collected these pins from the biggest stars of the day, Ricky Vaughn(left), Steve Simpson(right), and the S & S Express, which was Steve Simpson and "Jumpin'" Joe Savoldi.

 

WWF Tries to Invade Portland Wrestling! ~ 1985 Program

I don't know the exact date of this program, but I am sure it is 1985.  That is the first year

that I started going to the Sports Arena.  This might even be my first show!  It is interesting that

in 1985, Don Owen was concerned about Vince McMahon invading his territory.  I was guilty of going to some of those WWF shows that came here to Portland.  Sorry, Don!

He wasn't a Von Erich, but he looked like them.

I would NOT have walked around the Sports Arena in bare feet!!!!

Big Time Wrestling - January 9, 1985 ~ Grudge Match!

I assume they mean Billy Two "Eagles" here.  These little newspaper clippings always had mistakes in them. Again, not sure if 85 was correct on this.  I  know things changed pretty quickly, but I started going in Spring/Summer of 1985 and there was no Keno Nagasaki, Don Running Bear, or Mr. Ebony.

Portland Wrestling at the Lane County Fairgrounds March 15, 1985

This sounds closer to what was happening in 1985, when I started going to the arena.  In my era, they wrestled at the Lane County Fairgrounds, in Eugene, every Friday night.  They also wrestled at the Salem Center Arena every Thursday.  Since these wrestlers were on the road usually 7 nights a week, these were both relatively close.  Salem being about 45 miles from Portland and Eugene being about 90 miles.
