Who Is The Mat Man? 1989 - Portland Wrestling Mystery

The Matman Mystery....

In 1989, a masked wrestler named Matman joined Portland Wrestling. At first, we just had an interview. Everyone agrees that Scotty the Body was donning the mask and cape that night.
In July of 1989, Moondog Moretti had a match with the Matman, who was, in Moondog's words, "The Shits!" It has been said that Bert Prentice was in Portland at the time, and he had a "friend" or protege with him that took the Matman gimmick to the ring for the first time. No one knows who that might have been. Matman came to the rescue of Rex King on the 8-5-89 episode, and it was clearly a different wrestler. The general consensus is that Pat Tanaka was under the mask this time.
Many members of the Fans of Portland Wrestling group on Facebook thought it might have been Ricky Santana, instead of Pat Tanaka, but Ricky confirmed, in the comments, that it was never him.

Thanks to Mike Rogers for covering this interesting topic in

I was scanning some photos and came across this one. This is marked 6-17-89 on the back, but that date could be wrong. That's not a Scotty the Body chin. Is it a Pat Tanaka chin? Or is this the Bert Prentice protege?

The full episode with Matman.

Halloween 1989! We Won The Costume Contest at the Sports Arena!

Halloween 1989! My friend and I dressed as the Beach Boys (Avalanche and Buddy Rose). Mom made us some big board shorts, and we got some beach-themed t-shirts, stuffed them with pillows, and took a giant beach ball to the ring with us! We thought we were so funny! It was the first time I got to step inside the ring, and that was a REAL thrill! The contest was chosen by crowd noise, so when it came to our turn, I was really hamming it up and trying to get the crowd to cheer for us. Don Coss had to stop me! 😂 Buddy Rose walked by us on the way to the crow's nest and said he thought the costumes were great! We won tickets for next Saturday night.

Portland Wrestling Full Episode 8/5/1989 - Who is the Matman? - You Tube Video

Portland Wrestling Full Episode August 5, 1989.
If you Google who Matman is, it says that it is Scott Levy (Scotty the Body);
however, this guy is much smaller than Scotty.  If you compare the height between
the two compared to Sandy Barr, you can clearly see that he is smaller.

According to the Portland Wrestling Encyclopedia, by Mike Rogers, it may have
been a protege of Bert Prentice and was also possibly played by Pat Tanaka.
Some fans remember that there was an interview that Scotty was definitely in the
outfit.  So it's hard to know for sure.

Who is the Midnight Soldier? - Photos from 1989.

Brian Adams lost a Loser Leaves Town match and reappeared some weeks later as
The Midnight Soldier.  It was pretty easy to tell it was him.  Not too many people are as
big as Brian Adams!  I also recognized the mask because he was wearing it while passing out
candy at his apartment the previous Halloween!

I recently saw a photo of Rip Oliver in the WWF as the Super Ninja, and he
is wearing the exact same mask!  Do you think there was
more than one?  (See photo at the bottom.)

The Southern Rockers Appear on AM Northwest 12/28/1989 - YouTube Video

On December 28, 1989, The Southern Rockers appeared on a local morning
show called AM Northwest.  Steve Doll & Rex King came on to warn kids
not to do wrestling moves on each other, and to answer some questions from
the audience.  My sister Brea and I went to the show, and you can see the
lineup sheet from the TV station below the video.  Also on the show, which
wasn't recorded, was one of my favorite childhood authors, Stephen Cosgrove.
It was cool to see him, too.

Jody & Carl Stiles September 3, 1989 - Sandy Barr's Flea Market 20th Anniversary

They had a big autograph session on Sunday, September 3, 1989.
Steve Doll, Betelgeuse, Rex King, Carl Stiles, and supposedly Buddy Rose and the Grappler.
Super rare for Don Owen to allow the "bad guys"  to sign autographs.
We never went and looked for them, so I don't know if they were really there.

This is the only photo I ever got with Carl Stiles.

Happy Southern Rockers Day - August 19, 1989

Technically, the Southern Rockers, Steve Doll & Scott Peterson, started tagging on Portland Wrestling TV on July 18, 1987. Steve & Scott won the Pacific Northwest tag titles on 7 occasions. Just over 2 years later, Scott Peterson decided to leave the business, and Rex King joined Steve Doll. They won the Pacific Northwest titles four times. As well as winning the tag titles in the USWA, Music City, and the World Wrestling Council. They even went to the WWF after changing their name to Well Dunn. On Scott's last night as a Southern Rocker, August 19, 1989, they threw a big party at the sold-out Sports Arena and declared that Southern Rockers Live Forever! I just can't let the memory of this great tag team, or these great wrestlers, fade away! So, I've decided that today is Southern Rockers Day! I hope you'll go over to YouTube and watch a Southern Rockers match to celebrate. Hopefully something from the Sports Arena!
