1991 KPTV MDA Telethon w/Roddy Piper Steve Doll Bart Sawyer John Rambo Grappler

Another year, 1991, of Portland Wrestlers volunteering their time for the MDA Telethon.

If you called in and pledged at least $15, you could talk to the wrestler of your choice. I called in, and guess who I wanted to talk to? Steve Doll, of course. I waited about 30 minutes to talk to him. When I finally did, I was so excited! When I told him who I was, he laughed and said, "You waited half an hour to talk to me on the phone? Aren't you coming to the arena tonight?" I said, "Sure, but I've never talked to you on the phone before!" That made him laugh. I told him that I appreciated that he was always willing to give his time to help good causes. He said he was always happy to help in any way he could, thanked me for the donation, and said he'd see me tonight. It was a short conversation, but I got to talk to him on the phone!!!😀

Steve Doll Interview for Wrestling Fury Magazine - February 1991

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, I was looking to expand my circle of wrestling friends.  Some of my friends were into wrestling too, but not like me!  Many wrestling magazines had pen pal sections in the back, and I started writing to a few people and became fast friends with people all over the US who also liked wrestling.  At one point, I had 2-3 letters a day coming in the mail.  One of those pen pals was a gal named Donna LaRue.  She happened to be a writer for Wrestling Fury magazine.

The idea came about to do an article about Steve.  She made up a list of questions and asked me to deliver them to him, to see what he thought.  I was so nervous to ask him, but really, who's gonna say no to an article about them in a national publication?

He filled out the questionnaire and returned it to me the following Saturday night after the matches. He brought out a case with a bunch of his promo photos and other photos that I hadn't seen, and laid them all out on a countertop. He told me that he needed my help to decide which photos would be best to send for the article. He said, "It would have taken me hours to decide this on my own.  I was thinking maybe Jody can help me pick out the best ones."  😊  We spent about 20 minutes mulling over the photos and bringing it down to about 8 pictures to send. They ended up using 3 of them.

About 6 months later, the article was finally published.  When I brought him a copy of the magazine, he seemed so shy and embarrassed, like I had never seen him act.  To be honest, it was pretty cute!

This is a copy of the original interview he filled out for the article.
The original magazine article is also attached at the bottom.

All Programs from 1991 Are Scanned and Uploaded!

This whole project of scanning my programs, Wrestle-Media magazines, photos, and more has been quite a larger project than I ever thought. I've gotten a lot accomplished, but I have so much more to do!  It's been a fun trip down memory lane, and I've met some really cool folks along the way!

I am now officially over 200 programs in the archive!
I'm always looking for more, so if you want to share I would really appreciate it!
Scanning or even a nice flat photo with good light would be great!
Even one photo or program would be appreciated!
