Portland Wrestling Match - 10/28/89 - Steve Doll v Brian Adams - One of my favorite matches!

This is one of my all-time favorite matches. It's probably not anyone else's favorite, but it is mine. From Brian pretending to vomit when Steve was coming to the ring, Steve's matador routine, the butt shaking that the crowd loved, and the secret drop kick. All fun! I remember seeing this match at the Sports Arena and thinking that Steve and Brian were probably having so much fun out there. They were good friends and neighbors. They lived in the same apartment complex. They often rode together and went to the gym together. Years later, they even became brothers-in-law when Steve married Brian's wife's sister. I've heard stories about Brian not wanting to stay at Steve's house in Hendersonville, TN because he thought it was haunted!

Portland Wrestling 4/8/89 Welcome to the Breakfast Club Brian Adams v Nord the Barbarian Strap Match ~ Video

 

One of the most iconic moments in the later days of Portland Wrestling. The Oregon Boxing and Wrestling Commission had banned all blood, and lots of other things, in wrestling, and the Booker (The Grappler) was open to ideas about new ways to wow the crowd. John Nord (The Barbarian) suggested the cereal and milk, and it seemed like as good an idea as any, so they went for it! They didn't tell Don Owen beforehand, so his anger in the interview after was probably genuine. He was very concerned with how much it would cost to clean the mat. Nord was known for hitting hard, and Brian was COVERED in black and blue bruises after the matches that night. Being the weird wrestling girl at school meant that on Monday everyone wanted to talk to me about it because it was such a big deal.

No doubt BOILING hot in the Portland Sports Arena on August 1, 1987.

But totally worth it to see these exciting bouts!

Art Crews lost his hair, and the newly minted Southern Rockers (2 weeks old),

did not win the titles.

 

Portland Wrestling Complete Show 9/7/1985 You Tube Video + Program

 This is probably the second or third time I'd gotten to go to the Sports Arena. The S&S Express were my favorite team! Steve Simpson was my favorite wrestler. The first night we went to the Sports Arena, we waited in the parking lot after the matches to get autographs. Steve and Ricky Vaughn were riding together, and after we got their autographs, we went running back to my mom's car. I slipped and fell. Steve Simpson jumped out of the car, ran over to check on me, scooped me up (I was 9), and carried me to the car. After that, he was my favorite!

Portland Wrestling Parking $1 Ticket - 3/3/90

I recently posted this ticket on the Fans of Portland Wrestling Facebook group.

I didn't remember them charging for parking.  One of the members of the 

group let us know that the main parking lot was free, but the overflow parking at the Flea

Market building charged $1 to park.  It's interesting that Sandy Barr charged for parking and

Don Owen didn't.  He was well known for pinching every penny!

June 13, 1987 - Steve Doll Debuts in Portland Wrestling - Video, Photo, Clipping and Program

 

Steve Doll started his career in Mid-South wrestling in October of 1985. In September of '86, he started wrestling in World Class, and then came to Portland on June 13, 1987. He didn't have much time on the microphone before Portland, so the interview is a little awkward, but it didn't take him long to find his style and build a HUGE fanbase here in the Northwest! June 13, 1987. Steve Doll debuts in Portland Wrestling. I was already a big fan. I'd seen Steve on World Class some months before. We'd just gotten cable on a day when I was home sick from school. I was flipping around the amazing number of 36 channels, and came across World Class on ESPN. My previous favorite wrestler was Steve Simpson, and I heard his name, so I stayed to watch. I saw Steve wrestle for the first time, and suddenly I had a new favorite! I was conveniently sick every Wednesday so I could watch at 1pm, until we got a VCR and I could record it. We went to the Sports Arena on the kids' free night that was closest to my birthday. When we got there, I got my program and looked inside and saw the little graphic that said, "We welcome newcomer Steve Doll!" I was so excited! My favorite wrestler, here!! I'd missed the announcement the week before. I got the chance to talk to him and get his autograph. He told me that it was the first autograph he signed in Portland! I excitedly told him that he was my favorite wrestler and I had been watching him on World Class. He was all smiles and seemed really excited to be there. He won his match against the Mighty Sputnik as well as the Battle Royal that evening.
