I was 12 in May of 1989. I was crazy for the Southern Rockers, like all of my 12-year-old friends. A few months earlier, there was an angle that had Scotty The Body intervening in their partnership and broke them up. Southern Rockers fans went WILD over this angle and the Sports Arena was jam-packed EVERY week. The previous week there was a tag team tournament that had participants chosen by blind draw. Steve Doll & Scott Peterson miraculously ended up as partners, even though they were now sworn enemies. The match started with clear animosity between the two, but as it went on they worked together more and more and by the end they were best friends once again! And of course, they both turned on Scotty The Body and stripped him down in the middle of the ring. It was great storytelling and everyone was SO into it! During the next few months the fandom of the Southern Rockers hit a fever pitch. They had to have been doing incredibly well at the merch table because all of the girls had their Southern Rockers t-shirts and every autograph session was packed with fans buying photos and other merch. I had to buy it all myself. I was babysitting every day after school and any other opportunity I could, other than Saturday night, of course, to make enough money to buy it all! It is unfortunate that Scott chose to leave wrestling just a few months later.
@TheCrispyKids put together a YouTube video of some highlights from that year.
